Action Research
I have learned several interesting things regarding action research as it relates to the field of education, more specifically in the role of school administrators. The first thing is the actual meaning and purpose of action research. Action research refers to the process of a principal engaging in systematic, intentional study of his/her own administrative practice and taking action for change based on what he/she learns as a result of the inquiry. I also learned that inquiry is an important tool in making the reflection on one’s research purposeful and visible.
During the first week’s readings, I am now able to realize the relationship between administrator inquiry and the professional growth of a principal. By participating in action research, principals tend to develop a sense of ownership in the knowledge constructed, and this sense of ownership can contribute positively to the possibility of real change in schools.
In the beginning I was a little skeptical of action research, but after examining the benefits, I have come to the conclusion that action research by the principal of a school can lead to amazing results for the school. Action research forces principals out of isolation and forces them to surround themselves with professionals conversing about practice in systematic and meaningful ways. It also helps principals become role models for the teachers and students in their buildings, which can lead to best practices flourishing at your school.
